Local Information
Conference facilities
We'll have both blackboards and computer projection equipment available for talks. Getting around in Starkville
Getting around in Starkville is most easily done by car.
There is limited bus service on Saturday only, described at the Mississippi State Transportation Department's website.
We can help arrange carpools for Sunday if necessary. (If you so need, let us know Saturday by around lunchtime.) Hotels in Starkville
All the hotels discussed below appear on booking sites (travelocity, hotels.com, etc), with the exception of the Butler Guest House, the University Motel, and the Hotel Chester.
The best value is almost certainly the Butler Guest House. The cheapest is the University Motel. Within a reasonable walk:
The Butler Guest House is on campus, and only about a 10 minutes walk from the Math Department. The rooms are pleasant. Not on booking sites -- phone number is (662) 325-4140. We've arranged for conference participants to receive the MSState rate of $75/night -- mention the name Russ Woodroofe at booking to get this rate. The Comfort Inn is just off campus, and is about a 20 minute walk from the Math Department.
Within a bus ride (for Saturday): The Hotel Chester is a boutique-ish hotel about a 45 minute walk from the Math Department, but is located just off the "Old Main Express" bus route (see discussion above). It's located in Starkville's downtown, and is near a good coffeeshop and some acceptable bars and restaurants. Not on booking sites. Booking information is on their website, or their toll-free phone number is (866) 325-5005. The University Motel (alleged to be the hotel that Johnny Cash stayed in) is basic and inexpensive. 10 minute walk from the "Old Main Express" bus route. Not on booking sites -- phone number is (662) 323-1421.
Other budget options: There's a Days Inn, a Microtel and a La Quinta within an easy drive of the Mississippi State campus. All appear to be reasonable mid-range options. America's Best Value is possibly even more basic than the University Motel, but not quite as inexpensive.
Eating and food in Starkville
We plan to provide lunch on Saturday, and a light dinner at the reception on Saturday. There are several fast-food options in the Student Union (near the Math Department).
Slightly farther afield, some recommendations are:
Larry's Catfish Shack @ 605 S Jackson St: Good po' boy sandwiches, reasonable prices. Closed Sunday. McAlister's Deli @ 500 Russell St (in a strip mall): Basic deli fare, sandwiches etc. City Bagel @ 511 University Dr: Bagels and bagel sandwiches; also has some italian-esque items. Closes at 2pm. Petty's Carry Out BBQ @ 103 Highway 12 W: Good bbq. Some (rustic, outdoor) seating, despite the name. Little Dooey BBQ @ 100 Fellowship St: Another bbq place. Pricier than Petty's, but has better places to sit.
